Kenneth A. Bartosz, Director
Kenneth A. Bartosz is in his twenty fifth season as conductor of the Glenview Concert Band and in his fifteenth season as conductor of the Deerfield Community Concert Band, both all adult ensembles sponsored by their respective (IL) park districts. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1961 and earned his Master of Music degree in 1964, both from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL).
He served as chair of the Fine Arts Department (1967-1999) and as Director of
Instrumental Music at Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL) for thirty seven years, conducting
the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band, the Marching Band, the Jazz Band, the Musical
Comedy Orchestra, the String Ensemble, and the Chamber Orchestra. Additionally,
Bartosz has developed and conducted vocal ensembles and has been active as a musical
director and conductor in Community Theater. At the conclusion of the 2001-2002
academic year, he retired from full time teaching after a career which spanned forty years
in secondary, middle school, and elementary music education
Bartosz has served as President of the National Catholic Band Association (three
terms), President of the Northwestern University School of Music Alumni Association,
and was Chair of the 1991 meeting of the North American Band Director’s Coordinating
Committee. He was presented with the Northwestern University Alumni Service Award
in 1985 and was named a Chicago Land Music Educator of the Year in 1992. He served
on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin/Stevens Point Music Camp for thirteen
summers and is currently active as a music consultant and adjudicator throughout the
Midwest.
In January of 2001, he was named the fine arts teacher of the year (the Heart of
the School Award) by the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and in September of 2001,
he was inducted into the Loyola Academy Athletic Hall of Fame for his many years
of contributions to the school’s football program as director of the Loyola Academy
Marching Band.
Bartosz has been a member of the Illinois Music Educator’s Association,
the M.E.N.C., the National Catholic Band Association, the American Federation of
Musicians, and the Association of Concert Bands. He and his wife Dianne currently
serve as members of the Board of Director of the Bel Canto Foundation of Chicago,
an organization dedicated to the discovery and development of talented vocalists for
the operatic stage. In October of 2007, Ken was elected to serve as a member of the
Board of Directors of the Northwestern University Band Alumni Organization, the
NUMBALUMS.
Gregory A. Wojcik, Director
Greg Wojcik has been a director of the Glenview Concert Band since January 2012. Previously, Greg served as assistant director to the Band. He began his musical career at Lane Tech High School under the direction of Maurice Golden. Mr. Golden was inspirational in leading him toward music as a profession. His formal training on the trombone began under the influential guidance of Mr. Richard Schmitt of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Greg holds a deep appreciation to these fine music educators for the inspiration they gave. Mr. Wojcik’s professional performing career started at age 16 when he joined the Chicago Federation of Musicians. Schedule permitting, he still performs throughout the city in many various venues and idioms today.
Greg earned a B.A. in Secondary Music Education from Northeastern Illinois University under the guidance of Dr. Edgar Gangware. Upon completion of his student teaching at Glenbrook South High School, Mr. Wojcik was hired at GBS. With Mr. Peter Pappas as his friend and mentor, Greg worked side by side as assistant director for 14 great years. In 1994, upon Pete Pappas’ retirement, Mr. Wojcik was appointed the ultimate leadership role as Director of Bands at GBS. Under Mr. Wojcik’s direction, the band has continued to travel throughout the United States consistently receiving superior ratings.
In 2000, Greg had the honor of being chosen as the Distinguished Teacher of the Year at Glenbrook South High School. His professional affiliations include IMEA, MENC, IAJE, NBA, NEA, and the CF of M. Mr. Wojcik was the 2010 recipient of the Illinois Music Educators Association’s “Mary Hoffman Award of Excellence.” Greg and the GBS Band act as hosts of one of the finest jazz festivals in the area every January at GBS – the Northshore Jazz Fest. Mr. Wojcik guest conducts and adjudicates for festivals and clinics throughout the area. Greg is currently assisting Mr. Ken Bartosz in conducting the Glenview Concert Band. He has touched thousands of lives over his 31 years at GBS, and is loved by students, faculty, and colleagues.
Dick Schory
Dick Schory has earned a distinguished international reputation as an award winning percussionist; composer/arranger/conductor, recording, TV, film, video producer, author, audio pioneer, music publisher, educator, and business executive. An Honors Graduate of the Northwestern University School of Music, Schory performed as a studio musician/composer/arranger/conductor/producer in Chicago, New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles and as a percussionist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under musical director Fritz Reiner. Dick is the recipient of numerous music and entertainment industry awards including 7 Grammy nominations from the Academy of Recording Arts and Science and gold/platinum albums from RIAA for his 18 RCA Victor and Ovation recordings.
Mr. Schory is currently the founder and CEO of OVATION International; Media Center Associates; and The Institute for Media the Arts and Education.
